Base Intolerence

There is only one way to base 28mm cavalry, and that is on individual 25x50mm bases. I don't care what comes in the Norman Knights box, I don't care that only 8 horsemen are based properly, I'll just buy more bases.

The two chaps in red, one with a very poorly stuck together javelin.

Now that's out of the way, I can report progress! Painting has gone rather well, and hopefully I should have some finished models in the near future, then... Basing!

First shield pattern done. Not using transfers is a bit of a pain.

I've painted two shields (two pictured above) and they're not perfect, but that's why you practice. I will be taking my designs from the Bayeux Tapestry because that's the only historical source anyone could ever need, right?*

Bonewhite and brown ink work on THREE different surfaces!
My ongoing search on the internet for free wargaming rules has currently settled on Basic Impetvs**. I will therefore concentrate on assembling and painting an Anglo-Norman army (3 units of knights, 3 units of spearmen, two units of skirmishing archers). I decided against the Battle of Hastings lists because that would force me to buy metal crossbowmen (plastic offerings from Fireforge are from the 13th century). Conquest Games, after showing off their upcoming early medieval archers box, suggested they might do crossbowmen in plastic if the archers are a success. I await this development with baited breath.

The first batch of missile troops ready for painting.

*ADDENDUM: On the front cover of the Osprey Hastings book there are three knights, two of whom have new and interesting shield designs.
**Alright, alright, impetvs doesn't base anything individually. I'm a hypocrite.
