2015: A Base Oddessy

Addendum: the previous post should have been called "Shields of all Shades in a Shed", but I only thought of that after then event, so the present title stands testament to my shame.

Anyway, Basing tests!

I found a use for Renedra plastic bases after all!

From left to right, we have our first failure: watered down PVA isn't sticky enough to hold grit properly. I can't remember what the flock is stuck down with, but it seems to have worked pretty well. It's also better flock than I remember from my GW days (pause while I adjust my orthopaedic trousers).

The middle base contains grit stuck down with cheap brown paint, which is better than wet PVA, but still not perfect. The bottom half if brown paint covered with gloss varnish to imitate. I think a few more coats of varnish are needed, or perhaps some variation in shade?

Finally we've got the undiluted PVA, which holds sand rather better.

I couldn't resist starting to base the more completed horses. The plastic in the background will be expained later.
As you can see from the above and below photos, I'm starting with a layer of sand on each base, which I may or may not paint brown, then add flock and static grass. The sand is mostly there to hide the pedestals that these models come with. They make stick the figure to the base much easier, but are rather unsightly on the finished product.

Conquest Games Norman infantry have rather a large pedestal to conceal. I will use plenty of static grass.

I'm pleased to announce that on Saturday I'll be having some more games with Joey, so stay tuned for (hopefully) exciting fantasy action.

Two more shields in new styels: Masking tape and plain wood. The ring in the background of all of these photos is from the paint I've been using for base tests.
